El portàtil XO ha estat dissenyat a consciència per universitats i empreses punteres per tal de suportar les dures condicions dels països en vies de desenvolupament. Encara que sembli de joguina, és increïblement resistent i durador. La pantalla es veu perfectament fins i tot sota la llum directa del sol i la bateria es pot recarregar mitjançant plaques solars, una manovella o un cordill.
El portàtil, que (evidentment) utilitza Linux i ve preparat amb un bon grapat d'aplicacions educatives, està pensat per a ser utilitzat en xarxa wi-fi entre alumnes i professors d'una classe per tal de potenciar la capacitat d'aprenentatge de l'alumne i facilitar la tasca al professor. A veure si la iniciativa tira endavant i aconseguim reduir una mica l'escletxa digital - i de pas podem jugar amb un XO d'aquests ;)
Web del projecte OLPCIt's finally here. The long awaited project One Laptop per Child has started giving its XO laptop in the USA and Canada in a "give one, get one" deal. For 400$ you'd be able to get one of this nifty little toys and send one to a child in a developing country. There's also the option of just giving away for 200$.
The XO laptop has been thoroughly designed by universities and high-tech companies in order to obtain a product resistant to hard conditions in the target countries. It may look like a toy, but the thing is solid and durable like a rock. The screen has a special B/W mode readable under direct sunlight, and the battery can be recharged by solar power or by manual means (pulling a cord!).
The laptop, which of course runs Linux, is conceived to work in a network formed by all class students and the teacher. This way the students can unleash their creativity, learn faster and discover things by experimenting with them. Let us hope this great initiative will be successful and reduce the digital breach of the developing world, as well as give us the opportunity to play with one of this nice toys :)
